Omar Mbongi in action in a past match against Posta Rangers. He will miss the league’s opening game against Vihiga United
As the team gears up for the first match of the new season, head coach Dunstan Nyaudo will have to do without two key players for the game against Vihiga United at the Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday 9th December.
The Don’s plans have been disrupted with injury to midfielder Bernard Ongoma, who sustained a deep cut in the face during training on Thursday, and upon assessment was ruled out of the game, which the coach has described as a massive blow.
Utility man Omar Mbongi will also be missing in action after a bout of malaria locked him out of training for the final days of preparation ahead of the match and he will as well not be in the squad for the match.
“Ongoma’s exclusion is particularly a big blow for us because he has had a great preseason and ahead of this game he was super fit. You could see it clearly and he was very confident. As for Mbongi, his crucial role in the team can never be overlooked.
“He can play in three different positions and to miss such a player for any game is not easy. He was down with malaria and didn’t train on Friday but we hope both of them will be available in the next game,” the coach said.
While the two miss out, this could open up a chance for new boy Robert Oyuyo, who returns to the team for a second stint. Oyuyo, who can operate in both defence and midfield could be in the starting team as he commences his second stint at the team, having played for Ulinzi Stars in 2008 to 2009.
Another new signing, John Njuguna is also in the squad and could play a part in the match.
