After missing the win over Kisumu All Stars in the 2019/20 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season opening weekend, two key men – defenders Brian Birgen and Omar Mbongi will still sit out the Sofapaka game in Week 2 of the campaign.
While Mbongi recovered from the shin injury that locked him out of the opening match in Kisumu, he suffered a bout of malaria and may only resume training on Thursday 12 September, two days before the team faces Sofapaka.
Team Doctor John Imboywa confirmed it will be impossible to get him ready for the match, while also revealing that it could be a month before Birgen gets to feature fully, after getting off the EAC Military Games with injury.
“The two are still out but Brian will be under observation for longer. He is set to see a physio for further assessment but he may need a month or so to recover fully. As for Mbongi, the weekend match comes to soon; he could start training on Thursday and will definitely not be ready for this game,” the doctor said.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Shambi, who also missed the Kisumu All Stars game, but on compassionate leave, is back and in contention for a place in the team for the Sofapaka game.
In a corresponding fixture last season, Enosh Ochieng scored twice as the two sides played to a 2 – 2 draw.
