Elvis Nandwa extended his tally for the season with two goals against Gor Mahia either side of half time as Ulinzi Stars picked a 2 – 0 win at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Wednesday 19th September.
Head coach Dunstan Nyaudo stuck with 90% of the team that had delivered a 1-0 win over Wazito on Sunday, only replacing Bernard Ongoma and Oliver Ruto with George Omondi and Harun Mwale.
A good start from Ulinzi saw Gor keeper Peter Odhiambo kept busy in the opening exchanges and Enosh Ochieng should have opened the scores with a 20th minute header which drew a big save from Peter Odhiambo and two minutes later he saw a good chance go begging as he shot wide.
A rare foray forward for Gor Mahia caused some nerves as Innocent Wafula curled a shot wide when well placed and a minute later Ephrem Guikan also missed a big one after Wesley Onguso floated in a great cross.
The key moment of the first half came in the 36th minute as Daniel Waweru crossed in well for Nandwa to steer home the opener and in the 42nd minute Enosh had a goal disallowed.
The second half started with a bang for Ulinzi as Nandwa raced in well to meet a cross from Elijah Mwanzia to slam home powerfully for his 11th goal of the season in the 48th minute.
A number of near misses followed thereafter, the biggest being in the 68th minute when Masita Masuta hit the post after beating the keeper then Cliff Kasuti collided with the keeper when going for a low cross by Masita.
Gor piled pressure towards the end and Guikan went close with a cross that bounced off the bar.
In the end Ulinzi Stars held on for a fourth straight league win that consolidated fourth place on 50 points from 31 matches.
