Super sub Wamalwa saves the day against Sharks

Oscar Wamalwa rose from the bench in the second half to score a late goal that salvaged a point in a 1 – 1 draw in the Kenyan Premier League clash against Kariobangi Sharks at Afraha Stadium on Sunday 8th July.

Heading to the game straight from a win over Thika United, the team did not have the best of starts as a quick attack from the visitors and a momenta lapse in midfield allowed Sidney Lokale steal the ball in and dink past the advancing Timothy Odhiambo but the relief was clear when the ball drifted off target.

Another moment of indecision saw Sharks win a ball in midfield in the 13th minute through Bolton Omwenga, whose header was well controlled by Ovella Ochieng and what seemed like a harmless moment on the ball turned to be a crucial point of the game as the Keya international unleashed a low curling shot past Timothy in goal.

Sharks’ opener pushed Ulinzi off  their comfort zone, and managed a barrage of attack, three in quick succession which yielded little as Masita Masuta‘s close range header was blocked and Harmon Mwale’s follow up went begging across the face of goal.

Shitote, Waweru attempts

Another misguided pass in the Sharks defence found Cylus Shitote 25 yards out and his shot drifted wide as Ulinzi Stars started getting a hold into the clash.

Towards the end of the first half Dan Waweru was felled at the edge of the box, stopping a promising counter attack move and from the free kick he drew a great fingertip save from Gad Mathew to finish the opening half on a high.

In the second period, Ulinzi started off in the same breath but still lacked the finishing touch and the masterpiece came with the introduction of Wamalwa for Elvis Nandwa and Cliff Kasuti for Harun Mwale.

Wamalwa goal

The pressure was on from then and Ulinzi Dtars should have leveled with a Geoffrey Kokoyo header that flew just inches wide but Wamalwa saved the day with his 88th minute header from a knock down after Gad Mathew failed to clear a cross.

Tempers flared towards the end of the game, stopping Ulinzi Stars’ flow in the clash as the clock ticked in the four added minutes, the clash ending all square.
