Ulinzi comes from down to pluck Vihiga off Shield

Oscar Wamalwa celebrates his goal against Vihiga United on Sunday 15th July

The third meeting of the season between Ulinzi Stars and Vihiga United ended in favor of the Soldiers after rising from a goal down to see off the determined hosts 2-1 at the Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday 22nd July, sealing passage to the SportPesa Shield quarte finals.

After going close through Oscar Wamalwa and Omar Mbongi in a disjointed early period and looking the more likely to score, Ulinzi were shockedin the 37th minute.

A long speculative ball from Vihiga midfield that was not well dealt with by the defence bounced once and was met by Dennis Kalama who was having a great game and with a flicked header beat Timothy Odhiambo for the opener.

The lead did not last too long though; from the restart, a string and of passes and good composure got Ulinzi Stars back level as Harun Mwale kept a cool head on the left channel to spot an on rushing Elvis Nandwa, who met his well weighted cross with a thumping header from close range to level matters.

The clash would head to the break even after Timothy Otieno pulled a great one handed save to tip round another goal bound header from Kalama for a corner.

Vihiga proved harder to crack in the opening moments of the second half and posed a big threat going forward as well, but that lasted just until the 83rd minute when Ulinzi swiftly turned defence into attack.

A clearance from a corner was picked up by Michael Otieno, who with a pinpoint left footed cross picked Oscar Wamalwa‘s head from a crowd and the lanky forward leapt over his markers to guide home his third goal in as many matches and the goal also proved to be the strike that guided the team to the SportPesa Shield quarters.
