Ulinzi succumbs to first home defeat

Midfielder Cliff Kasuti in action against Vihiga United

Ulinzi Stars suffered the first home loss of the season after going down 0 – 1 to Vihiga United on Wednesday 4th April at the Afraha Stadium in the ninth round of the 2018 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) campaign.

A cagey affair that saw both sides create enough chances ended in the visitors’ favor after a late lapse in defence allowed Christopher Masinza to sneak in and slot past an unguarded James Saruni.

End to end attacks dominated the first half of the game before Vihiga settled the clash, in what was also their first win of the season.

A good start from Vihiga saw Andrew Murunga and Masinza test Saruni in the opening exchanges while on the other end Cliff Kasuti had a low drive tipped just wide by Barnabas Tiema then Masita Masuta had a head fly wide.

Vihiga United thrice went close in the second half through Victor Ayugi and Masinza and as the game drew to a close a lot of concentration on attacking left gaping holes at the back and midfielder Charles Okwemba’s introduction proved the game changer.

The veteran floated in a free kick that was deflected Masinza’s way and he found an exposed James Saruni and picked his spot well for the only goal of the game in the 86th minute.

The team now goes back to prepare for the clash against Bandari FC in Mombasa on Sunday 8th April.
